How to Reset Tire Pressure Light

TPMS Light on Dash

If you notice the flashing tire pressure light is on even after you’ve inflated your tires near Bartow, you may need to reset it. Your tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is an essential safety feature in your vehicle. At Kelley Automotive Group, we offer handy service tips to keep your vehicle performing at its best, including how to reset the tire pressure light. Don’t hesitate to contact our service center if you have any questions.

Resetting Your Tire Pressure Light

After inflating your tires, the light should go off on its own. However, if the TPMS light is on still, there are a few steps you can take to fix it:

  • Drive at or above 50 mph to reset the sensor for 10 minutes. This can cause your sensor to reset the next time you start your car.
  • With the car off, turn the key to the “On” position, but without starting the car. Hold the TPMS reset button until the light blinks three times, then release it. Start the car and wait 20 minutes for the sensor to refresh. You can find the reset button under the steering wheel. Refer to your owner’s manual if you don’t see it.
  • Inflate all tires to 3 PSI over their recommended amount, then deflate them completely. Don’t forget to do this with the spare tire, as it may also have a sensor. Once all the tires are deflated, inflate them to the recommended tire pressure.
  • With the car off, disconnect the positive battery cable with a wrench. Turn the vehicle on and honk the horn for about three seconds to discharge any power still stored in the car. Then reconnect the battery.

What Does a Flashing Tire Pressure Light Mean?

The sensors use a battery, and when the battery needs to get replaced, the flashing light is there to alert you. It could also mean there’s a problem with one of the sensors. It’s best to schedule a service appointment at Kelley Automotive Group near Winter Haven to diagnose the problem.
