How to Use a Jack for a Car

Let’s say your car needs a lift for maintenance or service. How do you use your car jack and jack stands safely? The process is easier than you might think, but there are some important considerations to take into account before you get started.

  • First, you’ll need to ensure a safe working environment. Park on level ground, preferably pavement, to make sure that your equipment does not move. Never use a car jack on dirt or grass, because your car jack could easily shift or even fall.
  • Place wheel wedges, wooden blocks, or bricks behind whichever tires will remain on the ground for added stability.
  • Put your car in “Park” and engage the emergency brake if your car is an automatic. If your car is a manual, shift into first gear while engaging the parking brake.
  • Place the car jack depending on where you will be working on the car. Lift the corner of the vehicle to work on just one wheel, or lift the center of the frame if you want to work on the front or back of the vehicle. Check the owner’s manual for additional guidance.
  • Set up your car jack. If you have a scissor jack, insert the rod and crank. If you have a hydraulic jack, insert the handle into the jack’s body and pump the handle to your desired height.
  • Next, position the jack stand under the frame at a “pinch weld” – or a place on the car’s frame that is reinforced for extra strength.
  • Adjust your jack stand and lock it in place. Lower the car until it’s sitting on the jack stand.
  • Remove the car jack and very gently push the car to make sure everything is secure.
  • Work on your car as usual.
  • Once you’re done with your tasks, use the car jack to lift the car a few inches and remove the jack stand.
  • Lower the car carefully, and then remove the jack.
  • Remove the wheel blocks, and you’re good to go!
