What is Brake Fluid?

Your brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid that helps your brake pedal move. It lubricates your braking system, and it keeps your system from corroding. 1. Find your vehicle’s brake fluid reservoir on the master cylinder under the hood. Check your owner’s manual to find the exact location as this can differ from model to model.
2. Look for “minimum” and “maximum” lines on the outside of the reservoir. Check the brake fluid against these lines. If the brake fluid is closer to the minimum line, it’s time for a brake fluid replacement or brake service.
3. Take a look at the color of the brake fluid. Dark brown or black coloring and an oil-like look mean you’ll need a brake fluid flush.
